Chapter 11 - THE OTHER WOMAN

I held the phone out to Daniel.
“Who is she?”
His face emptied.
Valeria whispered, “Daniel…”
He took one step toward me.
“Mariana, listen.”
“No.”
“It was one time.”
Of course.
One time.
The universal anthem of cowards.
I felt strangely calm.
Maybe there is a point where pain runs out of room.
“While I was working?”
He said nothing.
“While I was paying the bills?”
Nothing.
“While your mother was locking our daughter outside?”
He flinched.
“I didn’t know about that.”
“Stop using ignorance like it’s innocence.”
He sat down.
The woman in the photo was named Sofia.
A former coworker.
Daniel admitted the affair lasted six weeks.
Ended two months earlier.
Carmen knew.
She had the photos because she had followed him.
“Why?”
Daniel stared at the floor.
“To control me.”
There it was.
The family structure in one sentence.
Carmen collected weakness and spent it when she needed obedience.
I packed Daniel’s things into his duffel.
He watched.
“Where am I supposed to go?”
“I don’t care.”
“Mariana.”
“You lied to me. You helped your mother access my finances. You gave her my office key. You sat ten feet from our daughter while she cried outside. And now I find out you cheated.”
He started crying.
Real tears.
I felt nothing.
“Please don’t end our marriage tonight.”
“I’m not ending it tonight.”
Hope flashed across his face.
“I’m ending the version where I pretend it can be saved by an apology.”
He left.
At sunrise, Lena arrived with emergency filings.
We were halfway through the documents when the hotel phone rang.
Front desk.
“Mrs. Ruiz, there’s a woman here asking for you. She says it’s urgent.”
“Who?”
A pause.
“She says her name is Sofia.”
I looked at Daniel’s photograph on my phone.
Then toward the door.
Lena said, “Do not meet her alone.”
Sofia came upstairs.
May you like
She walked into the room carrying a baby.
And the baby looked exactly like Daniel.
