Chapter 18 - WHAT SHE PLANNED TO TAKE

Carmen was arrested three hours from the border.
She had cash.
Valeria’s passport.
Camila’s birth certificate.
And a notarized travel consent form with Daniel’s forged signature.
The destination listed was Guadalajara.
I read the report twice.
Then I threw up.
It was no longer about money.
She had planned to take my child.
Daniel sat outside the bathroom door.
“I’m sorry.”
I rinsed my mouth.
“Don’t.”
“I didn’t know.”
I opened the door.
“I believe you.”
He looked surprised.
“That doesn’t make it better.”
His eyes filled.
“I know.”
The criminal case moved quickly after that.
Hale took a deal and agreed to testify.
He claimed Carmen had approached him first.
Carmen claimed Hale manipulated her.
Nobody claimed Camila had imagined the balcony.
That part was too simple.
Too ugly.
Too visible.
At a preliminary hearing, Carmen saw me across the courtroom.
She smiled.
Then she mouthed, “Ungrateful.”
I almost laughed.
Ungrateful for what?
For financing her dinners?
For letting her live in my home?
For trusting her with my daughter?
Her idea of love had always come with a bill.
The prosecutor showed the judge the forged travel consent.
Carmen’s bail was revoked.
As deputies led her away, she turned toward Daniel.
“Tell them!”
He stood.
Everyone looked at him.
Carmen’s face brightened.
For one wild second, she thought he would save her.
Instead, he said, “I hope my daughter grows up never believing this is what love looks like.”
Carmen’s face changed.
Not sadness.
Not remorse.
Rage.
She screamed his name as the door closed behind her.
That night, Camila asked me a question.
“Is Daddy coming home?”
I looked at her.
Daniel and I had not discussed divorce in front of her.
But children feel absences before adults name them.
I said, “Daddy loves you.”
“That’s not what I asked.”
Three years old.
And somehow she had found the exact wound.
May you like
I had no answer yet.
But the next morning, Daniel gave me one.
