Chapter 1 - The Grave That Opened

The man who buried my father put a gun against my chest.
Then the ground opened beneath my feet.
"WHO ARE YOU?" Marcus Vale shouted over the rain.
"You buried my father. You know exactly who I am!"
Barefoot in the mud, I held up the birth record I'd stolen from the county archive. Beneath my name, a red stamp read UNAUTHORIZED LIVE BIRTH. It was a strange thing to find out at twenty-eight: somebody had decided you weren't allowed to exist.
Marcus looked sixty now. I remembered him at my father's funeral, guiding a six-year-old girl toward a sealed coffin. His hands shook around the pistol.
"Clara?" he whispered. "But I just saw you in the trees."
I turned. A young woman stood beyond the pines in a dark raincoat. She had my hair, my eyes, even the little crease between my eyebrows.
She had my exact face.
"Come back!" I shouted.
She raised one finger to her lips.
The earth trembled. A concealed steel hatch, rotten around its frame, tore loose under me. Marcus lunged, missed my sleeve, and disappeared above as I dropped through black air.
I struck a sloped metal grate, slid, and landed hard on a maintenance floor. My flashlight spun into a corridor glowing an impossible blue.
Glass tanks lined both walls. Inside them floated women connected to breathing lines and monitors. They were different ages, with different scars and different haircuts.
But every face belonged to my mother.
My mother had died twenty-two years ago.
"Stay away from the tanks," a man's voice said.
He stepped out of the shadows wearing a white lab coat. His dark hair was untouched by gray. The small burn above his eyebrow was exactly where I remembered it.
"Dad?"
Dr. Elias Hayes stared at my face, then past me at a monitor displaying two green pulses. A third line suddenly flashed awake.
He reached for the desk to steady himself.
"Clara," he said, barely breathing. "There were supposed to be two of you."
On the screen, a warning appeared: THREE MATCHING HEARTBEATS DETECTED.

Then a speaker above us crackled.
"Elias," a woman said pleasantly. "You've finally found all three."
