Chapter 16 - The Man Who Finally Told the Truth

Marcus threw himself against me as the first shot cracked across the loading dock.

The round punched a hole in the brick wall. Glass burst from the courthouse door. Grace shouted for everyone to get behind the concrete barrier.

The car accelerated away before anyone could see the driver's face.

I was on my knees beside Marcus when he pushed the metal box into my hands.

"Keep that," he gasped. "If something happens to me, make sure they see it."

He wasn't shot. His bruised ribs had given out when he fell.

"You're going to live long enough to answer questions," I told him.

"That's what I've been trying to do for twenty-two years."

Grace took the box, documented where it had come from, and called in the attack. Inside were the original 2004 security logs, payroll authorizations, and a recording of Miriam shouting for the doors to be opened.

A man's voice on the recording said, "Dr. Rusk ordered this wing sealed."

Then my mother screamed my father's name.

I couldn't listen to the rest.

Marcus sat against the wall, shaking. "I signed the burial certificate. I told myself keeping you alive was worth the lie. I let that excuse become my whole life."

Iris looked at him for a long moment. "You don't get forgiveness because you finally got scared enough to confess."

"I know."

At 1:12 a.m., Grace received authorization for an emergency search and medical intervention at White Pine. State officers, physicians, and transport ambulances were already assembling.

Wren stepped forward with the utility map. "I know the secondary entrance."

Grace studied it. "You stay behind me. No one leaves this formation."

We drove toward the forest under police escort. From the ridge, I saw the laboratory's private convoy lining up at the loading tunnel.

Then, one by one, the facility lights went dark.

The last thing visible was a red beacon above the ventilation shaft.
