My daughter was three weeks old when I heard a scream from behind the downstairs bathroom door.
Not her hungry cry.
Not the offended little squeak Lily made during diaper changes.
A scream.
Sharp.
Terrified.
I had been in the laundry room for less than five minutes.
Linda had offered to hold Lily while I moved a load of onesies into the dryer.
“You look exhausted,” she said.
“Go do something without a baby attached to you.”
Linda Carter was my husband’s stepmother.
She had been married to Ryan’s father for twelve years.
Controlling?
Yes.
Difficult?
Sometimes.
Dangerous?
I had never imagined it.
I ran down the hallway and shoved open the bathroom door.
Linda stood over the toilet.
Both hands were pressing down on the lid.
Something underneath it was screaming.
“WHAT ARE YOU DOING?”
