Chapter 9 - Three Knocks

Nobody moved.

Three more knocks.

Slow. Even.

Ryan reached for his phone.

Natalie whispered, “Police?”

“No.”

I lifted Lily from the bassinet and carried her into the pantry, where there were no windows.

Ryan called 911.

The knocking stopped.

For thirty seconds, the house went silent.

Then the motion light outside the kitchen snapped on.

A shadow crossed the blinds.

Natalie grabbed my arm.

Police arrived four minutes later.

The porch was empty.

But a small gift bag sat on the welcome mat.

Inside was Lily’s missing bottle.

Clean.

Dry.

And wrapped around it was the hospital blanket.

There was also a note.

YOU SHOULD HAVE LET ME HELP.

Detective Harper arrived and bagged everything.

“Linda knows where you are,” she said.

Ryan looked furious. “Only family knows this address.”

Natalie’s face changed.

“So does the family group chat.”

Ryan stared at her.

Six months earlier, Linda had created the group for baby shower planning.

Natalie opened it.

Location sharing was enabled.

Mine had been on since the day Lily was born.

I shut it off so hard I nearly cracked the screen.

Harper assigned a patrol car to the house.

At 2:40 a.m., I finally slept.

At 3:07, Lily cried.

I sat up instantly.

Ryan was already standing beside the bassinet.

“She’s okay,” he whispered. “She’s hungry.”

I watched him make the bottle with shaking hands.

Then his phone buzzed.

A voicemail.

No caller ID.

He played it on speaker.

Linda’s voice filled the room.

“You think Emma saved that child?”

Ryan went still.

“You have no idea what she’s done.”

A pause.

Then Linda said, “Ask your wife why she never told you about the first pregnancy.”

The message ended.

Ryan slowly turned toward me.

“What first pregnancy?”
