Chapter 18 - The Whole Truth

The hearing room was packed. People who had threatened Jax online now sat two rows behind him, staring at the scars they'd turned into proof of a crime. Dorsey arrived with Dana and three lawyers. He smiled at the local cameras until Detective Grant entered with two sealed evidence envelopes.
One attorney called me an unreliable mother who had struck her own child. I didn't deny it.
"Yes," I said into the microphone. "I swatted his hand. He was choking, and I thought he was misbehaving. I can't change that moment. I can tell you exactly what happened next."
The full recording played. You could hear a fork drop. You could see Leo silently pleading. You could see Jax recognize the emergency before anyone else in the booth. The video showed him moving me aside, supporting Leo forward, and giving the blows that freed his airway.
When Leo's first breath came through the speakers, a woman behind me began to cry.
Then the room watched Dorsey hide the toy jar.
Then it heard his voice: "Make the big guy the problem."
Dorsey's attorney stood. "This is being taken out of context."
"Which context?" Mrs. Finch asked from the witness table. "The one where a little boy was dying, or the one where your client was planning his publicity?"
Lena testified about the warnings. Ava's grandmother described the earlier incident. Malcolm accepted responsibility for cutting the footage and for ignoring the age label. The county officer explained that the diner had continued distributing inappropriate small parts despite repeated complaints.
At the end of the hearing, the licensing board ordered the promotion stopped, suspended the diner's operating license pending corrective review, and referred the evidence of altered records and possible false statements to investigators. Civil claims by the affected families would proceed separately. Dorsey did not go to jail that afternoon. Real accountability takes longer than a dramatic video.
But for the first time, the full truth was in the record.
Jax got up to leave without speaking to reporters. A small voice called from the doorway.
