Chapter 1 - Family Only

“You weren’t invited, Aaron. This is for family only.”

My mother said it through a three-inch crack in the front door while freezing rain slid down the back of my neck.

I stood on the porch with a bakery box in one hand and two gift bags cutting into the fingers of the other. Behind her, Christmas music played. Somebody laughed. Glasses clinked. The whole house glowed warm and gold.

I stared at her. “Mom, I drove six hours.”

“I know.”

“You knew I was coming.”

Her jaw tightened. “Please don’t make this ugly.”

That almost made me laugh.

I looked past her shoulder. My sister Melanie crossed the hallway in a red sweater, saw me, and immediately turned away.

That was all I needed.

I handed my mother nothing. I didn’t argue. I didn’t ask what I had done this time. I simply said, “Merry Christmas.”

Then I turned around.

“Aaron,” Mom called softly.

I stopped.

For one stupid second, I hoped she was going to open the door.

Instead she said, “Don’t leave the cake in your car. It’ll freeze.”

I kept walking.

By the time I reached my car, my hands were shaking so hard I dropped the keys twice.

I sat behind the wheel and stared at that house. The house whose electricity I paid. The house whose internet bill hit my card every month. The house Dad lived in while driving a car registered under my name.

My phone buzzed.

Melanie.

DON’T TAKE IT PERSONALLY. YOU KNOW HOW YOU ARE.

I read the message three times.

Then I opened my banking app.

The joint emergency account showed $18,742. I had put almost every dollar in it.

Under “recent activity,” there was a charge I didn’t recognize.

$3,900.

Merchant: HARTWELL JEWELERS.

I frowned.

Then I saw another.

$1,250.

RIVERSIDE EVENT RENTALS.

And another.

$680.

CHAMPAGNE CELLAR.

My family wasn’t just having Christmas without me.

They were throwing a party with my money.

May you like

I smiled.

Then I pressed “Freeze Account.”
