Chapter 19 - The Folder

Dad found the folder when he returned to the house with a police escort to collect his things.

It was red.

My name was written across the tab.

AARON.

Inside were copies of my tax returns, credit reports, insurance papers, bank statements, loan forms, the forged power of attorney, and the fake lease renewal.

Then I saw a handwritten page titled:

AVAILABLE RESOURCES.

My salary.

My credit limits.

The duplex.

The SUV.

The joint account.

My life insurance.

At the bottom:

IF AARON RESISTS - REMIND HIM FAMILY COMES FIRST.

I laughed when I read it.

They had turned guilt into a financial tool.

The investigators took the folder.

The landlord ended the tenancy according to the lawful lease terms.

Tyler canceled the wedding.

Dad surrendered the SUV and gave a statement.

Mom refused to cooperate until February.

Then she asked to meet.

We sat across from each other in Greg’s conference room.

“I want to fix this,” she said.

“Start with the truth.”

“I was wrong.”

“About what?”

Her eyes hardened.

“All of it.”

“That’s not an answer.”

She leaned forward. “I kept this family together.”

“No. You kept it dependent.”

“I did what I had to do.”

“You forged my name.”

“For your sister.”

“You stole Grandma’s money.”

“For your sister.”

“You stole my rent.”

“For this family.”

Then she whispered, “What do you want from me?”

I slid Grandma’s letter across the table.

“Why did she warn me not to let guilt take what was mine?”

Mom stared at the handwriting.

Her face changed.

And I knew there was one final truth left.
