Chapter 14 - Under the Flowerpots

Denise knew the garden. Her mother planted marigolds wherever she lived, even in cheap apartment pots. When police showed her photographs of the farmhouse, she pointed to the raised bed beside the porch.
"She would have looked near those orange flowers," she said. "She always said marigolds marked the way home."
Officers searched the grounds and discovered an old storm cellar behind the raised bed. Inside, they found Helen sitting on a camp mattress, wrapped in a damp blanket.
She was weak, dehydrated, and furious.
"I told them I wasn't signing anything else," she told the paramedic. "They put me outside like a bag of trash."
Denise got the call while standing beside me. For a moment she couldn't speak. Then she whispered, "Mom? She's alive?"
I held her as she cried with relief so hard her knees folded.
The next morning, Helen was well enough to speak briefly with investigators. She explained that Vivian had tried to force her to sign a document allowing a property sale. When Helen refused, Evan transferred her to Raymond's farmhouse.
"They said no one would believe an old woman," Helen said. "I believed them for one night. Then I got angry."
Denise held her mother's hand. "We're getting you a lawyer."
"Good," Helen replied. "Make sure it's a mean one."
For the first time in days, I laughed.
But the relief didn't last. Naomi called to say Evan had requested an expanded custody hearing and was again accusing me of exaggerating the danger to the children.
"Even after the farmhouse?" I asked.
"He says he knew nothing about it."

Then Naomi read the witness list attached to his petition.
Evan intended to call my mother, Margaret Ellis, as a witness against me.
