Chapter 17 - The Woman at the Gate

Raina lowered the blinds while I lifted Lucy from her play mat. Mom scooped up Ben and carried him into the back bedroom despite the pain in her hands.
"Don't lock Nana downstairs," he whispered.
"Nobody is locking Nana anywhere," I promised.
Outside, headlights washed across the fence. Vivian stood at the gate in a pale coat, yelling that she wanted to see her grandchildren. Raina called police while I stayed behind the locked front door.
"Claire!" Vivian shouted. "You've turned everyone against me!"
I didn't answer. She had mistaken my silence for hesitation for years.
Officers arrived and directed her away. After confirming the existing court restrictions and recording the encounter, they took her into custody for questioning and further action. No one had to confront her in the yard.
Later, Ortiz told me investigators had executed a warrant for Evan's business records. The second phone had yielded deleted messages recovered by technicians. The messages weren't from a worried son trying to protect a confused mother.
They were from a man counting residents as accounts.
WALTER: DAUGHTER PAYS FRIDAY.
IRIS: CARD LIMIT RESET.
HELEN: MOVE HER BEFORE DENISE ARRIVES.
There was also a message Evan had sent Vivian after hurting Margaret.
SHE KNOWS TOO MUCH. IF CLAIRE WON'T SIGN, WE USE THE KIDS.
"He's not going to call this a misunderstanding anymore," I said.
"He can try," Ortiz replied. "His own words will be part of the evidence."
That night, I told Mom she never had to return to our old house.
"I can't believe I was afraid of making her angry," she said.

Then Naomi called with one last complication. Vivian's attorney had produced video showing Margaret handing pills to a resident.
They were planning to blame my mother for the medication abuse.
