Chapter 12 - The Photograph by the Music Box

The photograph was grainy, taken from the far end of the hospital corridor. Peter wore the gray coat he had worn to Eleanor's funeral. Victoria stood beside him, younger and without the polished confidence she carried now. The time stamp showed 11:48 p.m., nearly four hours before the hospital recorded Eleanor's final decline.

Richard stared at it. Victoria had said she met Peter only after Eleanor died. The image did not prove wrongdoing, but it contradicted her story.

Maya sat beside Richard as Elaine examined the photo. “I remember her,” Maya said. “She gave me candy and told me not to tell Daddy she was there.”

Richard's stomach tightened. “Why didn't you tell me before?”

“Because she said you were too sad, and if I made you upset, you might stop loving me.”

Every secret had been built on the same threat: if Maya spoke, someone she loved would suffer.

Elaine asked the hospital to preserve any remaining visitor logs and compare the image with the missing page from Eleanor's file. Investigators warned that an old photograph and a child's memory could not settle what happened medically, but they could establish who was present and what they knew.

That night, Richard listened to Eleanor's recording again. He heard her say Peter was worried about the foundation accounts and that Victoria had begged her not to expose him. Then he caught one sentence he had missed before.

“If they try to make you choose between the truth and keeping the peace, choose the truth.”

The next morning, the hospital called. The missing page had been located in an archived scan, and the director wanted Elaine present when it was opened.

The page was not a medical note.

It was a visitor's statement, signed by Peter Vance.
