Chapter 1 - The Little Boy in the Ballroom

The bride dumped an entire tier of wedding cake over my four-year-old son's head, then shouted, "Get that child away from my husband!"

I heard Oliver scream before I saw him.

He stood under the chandeliers of Hawthorne House, his little charcoal suit buried in white frosting, his dark curls dripping cream onto his bow tie.

Celeste held the empty cake stand like a trophy.

A hundred and eighty guests watched her smile.

My son had been running toward me with both arms open.

"Daddy!" he'd called.

Now he couldn't even open his eyes.

I crossed the ballroom so fast a waiter dropped his tray.

"Oliver, it's me. I've got you."

His hands caught my jacket.

"I was just going to tell you something," he whispered.

Celeste stepped toward us, the diamonds on her wedding dress glittering.

"Daniel, he ran straight into my display. He does this whenever the attention isn't on him."

"You poured cake on him," I said.

"He's fine. Look at the mess he's made."

I put Oliver behind me.

"Do not come closer."

Celeste grabbed another slice and flung it toward my chest. I stepped aside. It burst against an empty chair.

She charged again, and I caught her forearms long enough to keep her away from him.

"Stop."

She jerked free, staggered against the dessert table, and the remaining tiers fell in a crash of glass and flowers.

The room went dead quiet.

Celeste pushed herself up, frosting in her hair.

"You've destroyed the most important day of my life!"

"No," I said. "You did."

I took off my wedding ring and placed it on the ruined cake.

"The wedding is over."

Her father, Miles Vaughn, rose from the front table, looking less angry than frightened.

Oliver pulled at my sleeve.

"Daddy," he said, trembling, "I heard her say they only need your name one more time."

For the first time that night, Celeste stopped shouting.

May you like

She stared at my son as if he had just opened a locked door.
