Chapter 18 - The Truth Nobody Could Edit

Dahlia posted the uncut video herself.

Her caption was quiet.

I graduated with honors. My sister-in-law deliberately ruined my party. My mother then assaulted her. Both things are true. Please stop sharing the edited clip and leave my classmates alone.

She attached one photograph of herself holding her diploma before the celebration began.

People watched.

Some apologized for the things they'd written.

Others kept arguing.

Dahlia closed the comments and went for a walk.

“I don't have to attend every argument about my life,” she said when she came back.

At the university, the procurement office formally withdrew Tatum's catering proposal after reviewing the evidence and the unresolved fraud allegations.

The cleanup estimate for the damaged hall went to the insurance adjusters and the parties responsible; it was no longer being presented as a simple accident caused by student guests.

That Friday the lender sent Dahlia a letter stating that its completed review had found the guaranty unauthorized.

It would remove her liability and correct any related credit reporting.

Melanie forwarded the letter to the Richmond property manager and asked for a fresh application review.

Dahlia read the lender's letter twice.

Then she cried into my shoulder.

Not because everything was fixed.

Because one terrible thing finally was.

Severin arrived late that afternoon.

He had moved out of the apartment he shared with Tatum.

He'd also retained a lawyer and agreed to cooperate with the investigation.

“She's saying I planned it all,” he told us.

“You helped her lie,” Dahlia said.

“You have to face that.”

“I know.”

He set a small package on the table.

Inside was the strawberry recipe card he'd retrieved from Tatum's office, bent at one corner but safe.

Dahlia didn't hug him.

She took the card.

Before he left, Officer Ramirez called.

The fraud investigation had widened, and detectives wanted another recorded interview with Severin.

My son looked at the door as though he might run.

Instead, he picked up his phone and called his attorney.
