Chapter 11 - The Perfect Victim

Victoria stood outside my gates in a cream coat, tears shining beneath camera lights.

She looked fragile.

Abandoned.

Believable.

“I only want to see my husband and stepdaughter,” she told reporters. “Mark is under enormous stress. I’m worried he’s being manipulated by people around him.”

I watched from the security room and felt a strange calm settle over me.

This was her gift.

She could turn control into concern before anyone had time to notice the difference.

A reporter asked whether I had become unstable.

Victoria lowered her eyes.

“I would never publicly discuss my husband’s health.”

That sentence did exactly what she wanted.

By refusing to say it, she said it.

Charles swore under his breath.

“She’s building a divorce narrative.”

“Let her.”

He looked at me. “Mark—”

“No. We don’t answer with emotion. We answer with evidence.”

Detective Ellis agreed. Police served Victoria with notice that she was under investigation for forgery and possible child endangerment. The cameras captured that too.

For a moment, Victoria’s mask cracked.

She stared at the detective, then at the estate beyond the gates.

Not at me.

At the house.

That night my publicist released one sentence: Mr. Hale’s sole priority is his daughter’s safety, and he will cooperate fully with law enforcement.

Nothing else.

Lily slept in my room with three stuffed animals lined between us.

At two in the morning she woke me.

“Daddy?”

“I’m here.”

“Victoria said if she ever had to leave, she’d take something Mommy gave me.”

I sat up.

“What?”

“She called it my real inheritance.”

“The trust?”

Lily shook her head.

“The necklace.”

Claire had left Lily a small gold locket engraved with a lily flower. Lily wore it only on special days.

I opened the jewelry box in my closet.

The locket was gone.

In its place was a folded hotel receipt.

The room number had been circled.

And the reservation was under Harold Vance’s name.
