Chapter 16 - The File Charles Never Saw

Charles denied giving Victoria anything.

I believed him.

But belief was no longer enough for any of us.

His firm audited its archives.

By midnight, they found the breach.

A junior records contractor had copied old Hale family files eighteen months earlier. The contractor had later taken a job with a vendor partly owned by Vance Development.

Victoria had not discovered a secret legal plan.

She had stolen the skeleton of one.

The original draft was something Claire and Charles had discussed years ago: adding a temporary co-trustee if I died or became permanently disabled.

Claire rejected it.

Victoria had revived it, changed the name, and forged my approval.

“She built her fraud from real pieces,” Charles said. “That’s why it looked credible.”

Detective Ellis added the data breach to the case.

Victoria’s settlement demand collapsed.

Then things turned dangerous in a different way.

Someone leaked parts of the guardianship petition to a gossip site.

The headline called me an “unstable shipping billionaire.”

By morning, photographers were outside Lily’s school.

I kept her home.

She watched the cars from an upstairs window.

“Are they here because I did something?” she asked.

“No.”

“Because Victoria did?”

“Because grown-ups sometimes make noise around things they don’t understand.”

She thought about that.

“Can we go somewhere quiet?”

So we did.

I moved Lily and Anna to our small coastal house in Maine, a place Claire loved because no one there cared about boardrooms.

Only four people knew the address.

That night, as snow began to fall, Daniel called me from New York.

“Mr. Hale, we traced the leak.”

“To Victoria?”

“No.”

“To who?”

He hesitated.

“Someone in your own legal team.”

Then the lights in the Maine house went out.
