Chapter 17 - Nora's Version

Composed. Measured. Certain the room would eventually belong to her.
Ethan watched through the glass with Detective Chen.
Nora's attorney sat beside her.
"My client is prepared to cooperate," he said.
Chen entered. Ethan stayed behind the glass.
She admitted he had recruited her into the shell-company fraud years earlier. She admitted Claire discovered it. She admitted knowing Travis had been told to "solve the car problem."
Then came Ethan.
"Grant said we couldn't risk another death tied to the family," Nora said. "He wanted Ethan impaired, declared incompetent, and removed."
"You administered the substance?" Chen asked.
Nora hesitated.
"Yes."
"Repeatedly?"
"Yes."
Ethan closed his eyes.
There it was: his wife had looked him in the face, smiled, and served him poison more than once.
"Why marry him?" Chen asked.
Nora's answer was almost insulting in its simplicity.
"Access."
She explained the plan: become indispensable after Claire's death, marry Ethan, isolate him, create medical evidence, then take guardianship of Lily and control Ethan's shares while Grant emptied accounts through offshore vendors.
"And the cup at the party?"
Nora looked down.
"Grant said the board vote was moving too slowly. He wanted a dramatic medical event."
"You knew the dose might kill him."
"I knew it was dangerous."
Chen leaned closer.
"And Lily?"
For the first time, Nora's face cracked.
"I never wanted the child hurt."
Behind the glass, Ethan whispered, "Liar."
Chen placed Rosa's recording on the table.
Nora heard herself asking what to do if Lily talked.
She went pale.
Then Chen played Camila's video.
Nora stopped speaking entirely.
At the end, her attorney requested a break.
As guards stood her up, Nora suddenly looked toward the one-way glass.
She could not see Ethan.
But she seemed to know he was there.
"Tell Ethan one thing," she said.
Chen waited.
"Claire didn't hide only one copy."
Ethan stepped closer to the glass.
Nora smiled faintly.

"Grant spent three years looking for the second one."
Then she was led away.
