Chapter 20 - Believe Me the First Time

Not because he wanted to remember Nora.
Because he wanted to remember Lily running across that room while every adult stood still.
He also stopped pretending work deserved every part of him.
On Friday afternoons, his calendar now said only one thing:
LILY.
They went to parks, science museums, terrible pizza places, and once spent four hours building a cardboard castle that collapsed before dinner.
"You're family," Lily told her.
Nora and Grant were sentenced months apart.
Ethan did not attend either hearing.
He had heard enough from both of them.
One rainy evening, Lily climbed onto the stool beside him while he made hot chocolate.
He set her mug down.
She stared at it.
For a moment, fear crossed her face.
Ethan saw it.
He did not tell her she was being silly.
He did not tell her to forget.
He poured his own cup from the same pot and took the first sip.
"Want me to make something else?" he asked.
Lily considered it.
Then she shook her head and wrapped both hands around the mug.
"This is okay."
They carried their drinks to the living room.
On the mantel stood a photo of Claire holding a three-year-old Lily, both of them laughing into the wind.
Lily looked at it for a long time.
"Mommy tried to tell you too, didn't she?"
Ethan swallowed.
"Yes."
"But you were away."
"I was."
"And I told you when I saw Nora."
He nodded.
Lily leaned against him.
"You believed me."
Ethan kissed the top of her head.
"You had to save my life before I understood how much you'd been carrying. I wish I'd noticed sooner."
She was quiet.
Then she said, "Next time, believe me the first time."
He smiled sadly.
"Deal."
Outside, rain tapped against the windows.
Inside, nothing hissed or burned. For the first time in a long time, their house was simply a house.
May you like
And Ethan finally understood that Lily had not been the frightened child in that room.
She had been the bravest person in it.
