Chapter 17 - The Original Recording

The security company recovered a second copy of the pool footage from a cloud cache. It showed no clear view of Lily falling, but it showed Celeste unlocking the garden gate, setting the envelope on the stone bench, and stepping away. Several minutes later, Lily entered the path. Celeste did not return when Lily slipped. She walked toward the house instead.

The recording was not enough to prove she had pushed Lily. It did prove that she had lured the child to the pool and left the gate open. It also showed Owen entering the camera room shortly after the rescue and disconnecting the local unit.

Ben sent the footage to the police and the county child-safety investigator. He also asked the school to reopen the complaint against Nora, attaching the work order and her lesson records.

When I showed Lily the still image of Celeste by the gate, she looked down at her hands. "I thought if I found Mommy's necklace, she'd stop being mad at me."

I sat beside her. "You never had to earn anyone's kindness. Not hers. Not mine."

She leaned into me, then asked a question I couldn't answer. "Did Mommy know Celeste was mean?"

I looked at Emily's note on the table. "I think Mommy was worried about something. I think she tried to leave us a warning."

Lily raised her head. "Then we have to find the rest of it."

The investigator warned me not to call the footage a complete answer. It showed access, timing, and a deliberate choice to leave the gate open; it did not show a hand pushing Lily. I agreed. My anger wanted certainty, but my daughter deserved a truth that would survive scrutiny.
