Chapter 17 - The Second Wire

The second request was a $1.8 million wire described as a sponsor reimbursement. It had been queued with conditional release instructions, backed by the same disputed authorization. Richard's investment firm had not sent its ten million, but somebody still hoped to pull money out through the bank financing.
Adrian immediately provided the bank's counsel with the new evidence and renewed the demand for a complete stop. The bank confirmed that both disbursements were on hold pending the court's ruling.
Before the judge, Vanessa's lawyer argued that Daniel had acted as the company's public face for years and that my sudden objection threatened ordinary operations.
Mara presented the deeds, operating agreement, disputed assignment, volunteer records, and a declaration from the notary obtained through counsel. Adrian explained the immediate risk to the buildings and tenants without asking the judge to decide every allegation that morning.
The judge studied the paperwork. “Mr. Hartwell, did your mother authorize you to transfer her membership interests?”
Daniel stood. His attorney touched his sleeve. The entire room went silent.
“No,” he said.
Vanessa jerked toward him. “Daniel!”
The judge raised a hand. Daniel continued, “I signed a payment request. I knew she hadn't approved it.”
I shut my eyes for one second. Truth hurt, but it was finally in the room.
The judge granted a temporary order preventing disputed transfers, financing, and changes in control pending further proceedings, with ordinary necessary expenses subject to proper oversight. It was not a final verdict. It was time to keep the damage from spreading.
On the courthouse steps, Vanessa brushed past me. “Enjoy your little victory,” she hissed. “I haven't finished.”

Then Richard received a message from his corporate attorney. Vanessa had sent a statement to his investors that morning.
It accused me of extorting my own family and warned that the Vale investment firm was covering up my financial misconduct.
