Chapter 17 - THE ROOM WHERE HE LOST CONTROL

Robert arrived at the courthouse in a pressed charcoal suit, carrying a leather folder.
He nodded at the people in the hallway like a man attending an award ceremony.
When he saw Susan beside Angela, he stopped smiling.
“You're coming home,” he said.
Susan looked at the floor, then lifted her head.
“No.”
He stepped toward her.
A court officer asked him to move along.
Robert backed off, furious that someone had given him an instruction.
Inside the hearing room, he described himself as a peaceful father attacked by a dangerous athlete.
He said he only wanted to protect his family.
Rachel questioned him about the belt.
“It was a family joke,” he answered.
“Did you instruct David to hit his wife?”
“No.”
The full recording played.
His voice filled the room.
“HIT YOUR WIFE WITH THIS BELT.”
No one gasped.
The silence was worse.
The judge watched me redirect the swing, then watched Robert block the door.
Marcus testified about the dinner and the offer of money.
Susan testified that her husband had threatened to make her homeless if she told the truth.
David took the stand last.
He admitted his earlier declaration was false and described how he'd helped set up the camera.
The judge asked him why he'd changed his account.
“Because I stopped being more afraid of my father than of what I was doing to everyone else,” he said.
The judge denied Robert's request for an order against me, explaining that the evidence did not support his allegations.
She also made clear that the parties' other disputes belonged in separate proceedings.
Robert stood so abruptly his chair scraped the floor.
“This is my family!” he shouted.
The court officer ordered him to sit.
Susan reached across the aisle and took my hand.
For one moment, we both breathed.

Then Angela leaned toward us with a message from the bank.
Robert had submitted the disputed power of attorney again, this time to begin selling the house.
