Chapter 15 - WHEN THE STRONGEST PERSON BREAKS

I called the police rather than approach Robert's truck.

By the time an officer drove past the house, it was gone.

I gave him Susan's last known location, her missing calls, and the history of threats.

He took the information seriously without promising an answer he couldn't give.

David arrived twenty minutes later, breathless and furious.

“Why would she leave alone?”

“Because she's an adult, David,” Linda said.

“She doesn't need permission to go anywhere.”

That stopped him.

We called Angela, who confirmed Susan had canceled her appointment but hadn't explained why.

We called the bank.

They couldn't discuss her private transactions.

We waited.

By midnight, I was sitting on Linda's stairs with my ring in my palm.

I'd spent years teaching children that skill meant control.

I couldn't control the cruelty of a man who treated his wife like property.

I couldn't control the school board, a stranger's opinion, or David's fear.

I could barely control my breathing.

My mother sat beside me.

“You don't have to win every round tonight,” she said.

“What if Susan goes back?”

“Then we keep the door open.”

I leaned against her shoulder, exhausted enough to feel twelve years old.

David stood at the bottom of the stairs.

“Emily, I need to tell you something.”

“Not another secret.”

He shook his head.

“A decision.”

He'd contacted an attorney of his own.

He planned to withdraw his false declaration and testify truthfully, even if his father turned on him.

I wanted to feel relieved.

Instead, I thought of how much damage he'd allowed before finding his voice.

At 1:17 a.m., Linda's phone rang from an unfamiliar number.

It was Susan.

Her first words were barely audible.

“I'm safe.”

Then she added, “I found what Robert was hiding.”

“And it changes everything.”
