Chapter 14 - My Mother's Piano

Renee froze the transfer before sunrise.

Stephen's signature was valid.

Mine was not.

But the bank's biometric approval file showed a voice authorization that sounded exactly like me.

A synthetic copy built from years of interviews, board calls, and family videos.

Daniel had helped provide the recordings.

By breakfast, federal investigators were involved.

Dad wanted to resign immediately.

I told him resignation was not confession.

"You don't get to walk away clean because you're ashamed."

He nodded.

"You're right."

It was the first time he had said those words without qualification.

Adrian asked about Rose's private evidence.

Dad believed everything had been destroyed.

I remembered my mother's letter.

She had written one strange line near the end.

When men lock truth in boxes, put it somewhere they think belongs to women.

I walked into the music room.

My mother's Steinway had not been played since she died.

Inside the bench, beneath old sheet music, I found a false bottom.

There was a blue ledger wrapped in linen.

Dad sat down when he saw it.

The ledger documented every payment Rose had made to Marcus, every name he had given her, every official he claimed to control.

It also contained notes from Thomas Bell, the missing investigator from 2010.

He had met Rose secretly before he vanished.

The final page held a sentence in my mother's handwriting.

ELLIOT DOES NOT KNOW STEPHEN IS WORKING WITH MARCUS.

Dad read it twice.

For fourteen years, he had believed his brother was helping contain the damage.

Rose had known better.

Then Tessa found something tucked into the back cover.

A Polaroid.

Stephen stood beside Marcus Reed at a lakeside cabin.

Between them was Thomas Bell.

Alive.

On the back, Rose had written a date six months after Thomas was supposedly dead.

And one location.

BLACKWATER LAKE.
