Chapter 16 - The Recording

The Milwaukee vault contained three things.

Thomas Bell's recorded statement.

Copies of the original Joliet inspection reports.

And a second letter from my mother.

This one was addressed to my father.

Dad read it alone.

When he finished, he cried without making a sound.

Rose had written that protecting Mara from truth would eventually become another kind of betrayal.

She had begged him to stop confusing control with love.

He folded the letter carefully.

"She knew me better than I knew myself."

I wanted to comfort him.

I didn't.

Not yet.

Federal agents planned the exchange with Marcus.

The ledger would be copied. The original would remain secured. The recording would be duplicated across three servers.

Daniel asked to cooperate.

His lawyer negotiated nothing in advance.

"Why help now?" I asked him.

We stood in a government interview room under white fluorescent lights.

"Because Marcus will kill Stephen, then me, then anyone who can connect him to the money."

"That's fear, not remorse."

"I know."

For once, he did not ask me to forgive him.

He told investigators Marcus had installed hidden cameras at Whitmore House years earlier through a security contractor.

Tessa searched the estate.

She found four.

One pointed at Dad's office safe.

One at the main hallway.

One at the side entrance.

And one inside the conservatory.

Facing the cage.

The footage from the garden party had not been erased everywhere.

Marcus had kept his own copy.

Tessa accessed the hidden recorder.

On screen, Daniel dragged me toward the cage.

He locked the door.

Then, before returning to the guests, he looked directly into the hidden camera.

And said, "You wanted proof. There it is."

May you like

He had not been speaking to me.

He had been speaking to Marcus.
