Chapter 12 - The Grief He Gave Away

Marcus didn't deny it.

He sat in Dana's office with both hands flat on his knees.

"I told Isabella years ago," he said. "When Khloe and I lost our first pregnancy. Isabella said she was worried about her."

Khloe looked at him as if she had never seen him clearly before.

"That was our baby. Our grief."

"I know."

"You made something sacred into a conversation at a business dinner."

"I didn't understand what she was doing."

"You understood it wasn't yours to share."

Marcus lowered his eyes.

He had no answer that would improve the truth.

Dana interrupted carefully.

"I need both of you focused on the evidence, not on inventing excuses for him. The article also describes a psychiatric evaluation that Khloe never received."

Investigators learned the supposed evaluation was a forged document assembled from an old routine hospital intake form.

It wasn't a genuine clinical diagnosis.

The hospital reported the suspected misuse of its branding and began reviewing whether any private patient information had been improperly accessed.

The publication removed the unsupported medical claims pending verification.

Khloe still saw them copied across hundreds of accounts.

"People can say anything," she told Margaret that night.

"They can," her mother said. "But they don't get to decide what happened to you."

Later, Detective Brooks visited with an update.

The crisis consultant had preserved the original draft of the smear statement and provided it under a lawful request.

The first version contained a line the consultant had been instructed to keep unchanged.
