Chapter 4 - The Signature

Diane reached for the paper. I moved it out of her reach.

“Give that back. You're being dramatic.”

“It's my name on a document I haven't seen.”

“Everett said you'd agreed in principle.”

“I haven't agreed to anything.”

For a moment, the hallway was silent except for the hum of the elevator. Diane straightened her shoulders the way she always did before delivering a lecture.

“Vanessa is carrying our family's future. You're standing in the way.”

“Your family has a future because an entire staff works hard every day. A baby isn't a weapon, Diane.”

She gave me a look of pure disgust. “You always did think you were smarter than everyone.”

I stepped aside and let the door close between us.

Ruth arrived before dawn. She photographed the papers, sealed them in an evidence envelope, and asked the building to retain footage from the hall. Neither of us claimed to know who had forged the signature. That was a question for an investigation, not a shouting match.

By nine, Everett had posted a carefully worded statement about our “painful private separation.” He didn't mention the wine, the insults, or the ring. Vanessa posted a photograph of tiny knitted baby shoes. My inbox filled with strangers arguing about a marriage they knew nothing about.

Then my phone rang. Everett.

“Why are investors asking questions?” he demanded without saying hello.

“Because you moved fourteen million dollars to a company linked to your girlfriend's brother.”

“You've been spying on me?”

“Your controller reported an unusual transfer. That's her job.”

“You don't know the first thing about business.”

I looked across my kitchen at Ruth. Her pen stopped moving.

“Everett, where did you think the Harborline money came from?”

“A consortium. People who believed in me.”

“And if they stopped believing?”

He laughed. “They won't. I made them rich.”

A second line flashed on my screen. Jonah Pierce, Wardbridge's chief financial officer, had sent a message marked URGENT.

THE TRANSFER WASN'T THE FIRST. THERE ARE SEVEN MORE. AND SOMEONE ORDERED ME TO ERASE THE APPROVAL LOGS.
