Chapter 11 - THE COMPANY WITH MY MONEY IN MIND

Mercer Strategic Holdings had been formed six months earlier. Diane was the manager, Ryan an authorized agent, and the registered address was a mailbox store. The company had no visible business, yet it had been added as a destination for my money.
Diane changed her explanation three times, finally claiming she did not understand the company at all. Evan pulled up the filing. Her electronic signature was on every page.
"That's not proof I understood it," she snapped.
Officer Ortiz asked whether there had been any successful transfers.
Naomi contacted the bank's emergency fraud line while we waited.
Ten minutes later, she came back with worse news.
The pending external account had not received money yet.
But two smaller transfers had already gone elsewhere.
Nine thousand five hundred dollars.
Then twelve thousand.
Both sent to a consulting vendor called Northfield Advisory.
I knew the name.
Ryan had told me Northfield was helping with market analysis for his business.
I had approved the first invoice because I trusted him.
The second went through automatically.
"Who owns Northfield?" I asked.
Evan searched.
He found the answer.
Ryan's college roommate.
I closed my eyes.
The money would not destroy me. What mattered was the pattern: small transfers, stolen documents, a forged signature, then something larger if nobody stopped him.
Ryan finally spoke from the other room.
"Claire, I can explain Northfield."
I turned toward him.
"Did you take money from my company?"
"It's more complicated than that."
"Did you?"
He looked at the floor.
That was my answer.
Officer Ortiz began speaking quietly with her partner.
Diane rose from the chair again.
"This has gone far enough. We are leaving."
Marcus blocked the hallway.
"No, ma'am."
Her face hardened.
"You can't hold me here."
Officer Ortiz turned around.
May you like
"Actually, at this point, I need you to stay exactly where you are."
Then she reached for her handcuffs.
