Chapter 2 - THE HOUSE THEY CALLED HIS

Ryan always called it "my house" when he was angry.

That was one of the lies I had allowed to grow because correcting him seemed smaller than fighting over it.

The truth was simpler.

The deed had my name on it.

I bought the house four years before I married Ryan. After a garage break-in, I installed cameras that uploaded automatically to an off-site security server.

Ryan knew that once. Apparently, he had forgotten.

Diane pushed herself upright from the table.

"She hit you," she said to Ryan, pointing at me as if she had just discovered evidence of a crime. "Your own wife struck you."

Ryan rubbed his cheek.

"Claire," he said carefully, "you need to calm down."

"Your mother just swung a metal pole at me twice."

"Because you provoked her."

There it was.

The sentence every coward used when violence became inconvenient.

I stepped toward the wall panel near the pantry.

Ryan immediately noticed.

"What are you doing?"

"Calling security."

He blocked my path.

Diane laughed behind him. "Oh, please. Don't be dramatic."

I looked at Ryan's face and finally saw the thing I had spent three years refusing to name.

He did not think his mother's behavior was unacceptable.

He thought my resistance was.

"Move," I said.

"Not until you apologize."

"Move."

"Claire."

I reached past him and pressed the red emergency button.

The house alarm began screaming.

Diane's face changed instantly.

"Turn that off!"

Ryan grabbed for my wrist, but I stepped away.

"Too late."

A calm automated voice sounded through the ceiling speakers.

EMERGENCY ALERT RECEIVED. SECURITY RESPONSE IN PROGRESS.

Diane looked toward the front windows.

Then she looked back at me.

For the first time all evening, she seemed afraid.

He leaned close enough that I could smell coffee on his breath.

"You have no idea what you've just done."

I met his eyes.

May you like

"Actually," I said, "I think I'm finally starting to understand."

And then the front gate opened.
