Chapter 16 - THE FORTUNE BUILT ON SILENCE

The district attorney moved fast after hearing the recording.
Martin disappeared faster.
His house was empty.
His office computers were wiped.
His passport was missing.
Derek refused to say where his father had gone.
Meanwhile, Bennett & Cole's board called an emergency meeting.
Evan sat at one end of the conference table with Claire and Samuel.
Helen stayed home.
Mara's shares had been stolen.
Samuel's ownership had been erased.
Martin had siphoned millions through shell companies.
Robert had hidden all of it to protect the business and his reputation.
The fortune Evan and Claire grew up around had not been created from nothing.
It had been built partly from other people's work, other people's money and decades of silence.
A board member leaned toward Evan.
"If this becomes public, the company could collapse."
"It is already public."
"Not all of it."
Claire stiffened.
"We can settle with Mr. Cole. We can compensate you privately. There are ways to protect the brand."
He had heard the same sentence his entire life in different forms.
Protect the family.
Protect the company.
Always protect the thing that benefited from the lie.
"No."
The board member blinked.
"Excuse me?"
"No private settlement."
"We disclose everything."
Claire took a breath.
Samuel nodded.
The vote split the board.
Helen.
Martin.
"You always were Robert's conscience," he said.
"Where is my mother?"
Helen cried out in the background.
Martin's voice stayed calm.
"Come to the old Bennett house."
The house Helen had sold after Robert died.
"Come alone."
"No."
Martin laughed.

"Then the woman who spent twenty-nine years resenting you may not get the chance to apologize."
The call ended.
