Chapter 19 - THE LAST LETTER

Helen brought the letter herself.
She placed it on Evan's apartment table and stepped back.
"I should have given you this two years ago."
Evan stared at the envelope.
Robert's handwriting.
"Why didn't you?"
Helen looked exhausted.
"Because I was still protecting the version of your father I wanted you to remember."
Robert admitted he had discovered Martin was tampering with his heart medication.
He had stopped taking the pills before the final meeting.
He had been diagnosed with an advanced heart condition and refused surgery.
That night, after recording Martin's threat, Robert drove away instead of going to police.
He wrote that he was tired of consequences and ashamed of facing his children.
He did not deliberately crash.
He simply chose not to seek help when the chest pain began.
Evan lowered the letter.
"So Martin threatened him. Dad still made his own choice."
Helen nodded.
"Yes."
There were no clean villains in the final page.
Only one clear criminal and several people who had kept choosing fear, pride and silence until those choices became a family culture.
Helen sat across from Evan.
"I loved you."
For once, she let the sentence stand alone.
"I loved you," she repeated.
"And I resented you."
"Both were true."
"I felt both."
Helen nodded.
"I know."
"You made me spend my childhood earning a place I should have had for free."
"I know."
"You made Claire think love was something Dad took from her to give to me."
Helen closed her eyes.
"I know."
"I understand you better now."
Helen looked hopeful for one second.
"That is not the same as forgiving you."
"I know that too."
Evan folded Robert's letter.
Helen stood to leave.
"Will you ever call me Mom again?"
Evan did not answer right away.
Then he said, "I don't know."
May you like
It was painful.
It was also the first honest future they had ever had.
