Chapter 8 - $740,000

Allison met us in a coffee shop across town.

She brought printed ledgers and a resignation letter.

"I'm not going back."

Rachel asked:

"Why didn't you report this sooner?"

Allison looked ashamed.

"Ryan said the transfers were temporary. He said a new project would cover everything."

Then the project failed.

Subcontractors demanded payment.

Clients started asking questions.

Ryan needed cash fast.

The house was the easiest asset.

My house.

Allison showed us one more transfer.

$86,000 to D. Mercer Consulting.

Diane's company.

I stared.

"She has a consulting company?"

"On paper."

Rachel asked what services Diane provided.

Allison shook her head.

"None that I saw."

The payments began eleven months earlier.

Almost exactly when Diane started visiting our house three times a week.

Not family concern.

A paycheck.

Then Allison slid over an email.

From Ryan to Diane.

Subject:

SARAH.

Mom,

Keep pushing the stability angle. If she thinks people are worried about her, she may sign just to prove she's reasonable.

I read it twice.

Jenna swore under her breath.

Rachel asked Allison if she had the original metadata.

"Yes."

Good.

Evidence, not screenshots alone.

Then another email surfaced.

Diane to Ryan:

She is stubborn because everyone has always protected her. Eventually she needs to understand what happens when nobody takes her side.

My hands went cold.

That sentence explained the kitchen.

The broom.

Ryan standing still.

He was supposed to let me feel alone.

Then I would bend.

Instead, the camera watched him do it.

Rachel's phone rang.

It was the detective.

They had reviewed an older section of kitchen footage.

There was one recording I had not seen.

Diane and Ryan discussing me while I was asleep upstairs.

In it, Ryan asked:

"What if she leaves?"

Diane answered:

May you like

"Then make sure she leaves without the house."

Jenna reminded me that fear rarely arrives labeled. Sometimes it looks like a favor, a family meeting, or paperwork someone keeps insisting is routine. That was why the small details mattered now.
