Chapter 2 - What the Camera Heard

At the hospital, the bruise on my shoulder looked like a dark purple road crossing my collarbone. A nurse photographed it beside a measuring strip. I kept staring at the door, expecting Ryan to walk through and explain why he'd let his mother hurt me.

He didn't come. His attorney called instead.

"Mr. Calder would like to resolve this privately," the man said.

"Then he should have stopped it privately."

I hung up and called Sofia Grant, the attorney who had helped my engineering firm through a contract dispute two years earlier. She listened without interrupting. When I finished, her voice was steady.

"First, get somewhere safe. Second, don't sign anything. Third, tell me exactly what they wanted."

"A statement," I said. "Something about inspection reports for Ryan's construction company. Diane said my name was already on them."

"Was it?"

"I don't know. I wouldn't read the paper while she was waving that broom."

Back at the Foundry, security supervisor Celia Warren met me outside my townhouse. She had copied the alarm footage to the police evidence system and preserved a separate original under the complex's retention policy. The kitchen camera recorded sound, too.

"There's a piece you need to hear," she said.

Ryan's voice came from the tablet, low but clear. "If she hits back, we can say she started it. She'll have to sign to keep it out of court."

I felt colder than I had in the hospital.

Diane replied, "She always thinks she's smarter than everyone."

"Ryan planned this," I whispered.

Celia didn't soften it. "That's what the recording suggests."

Sofia arranged for an emergency protective-order petition and told me to send her copies of any business documents tied to the fight. I opened my work email on my phone. At the top sat a notice from the state engineering board.
