Chapter 1 - The Sound of a Zipper

At 1:13 in the morning, I watched my mother-in-law hide a bag of white powder inside my suitcase. Then I heard my husband tell her over the phone, "Make sure it's enough to put her away for years."
I didn't move. I didn't even breathe loudly. I lay on my side beneath the comforter, watching through a slit between my eyelashes as Marta Reyes used a tiny blade to lift the lining of the suitcase I was taking to Singapore at dawn.
My flight had been moved up after a late call from our biggest client. I had packed in a hurry and gone to bed while Carlos supposedly finished work in his study. Marta had kissed my forehead after dinner and promised to make breakfast for my trip.
Now her knees were pressed into our bedroom rug, and her hands were steady as a surgeon's.
"It's in," she whispered when her phone vibrated. "More than half a kilo."
A man's voice crackled through the speaker. Carlos. My Carlos. The man who had held my hand when my mother died. The man I'd trusted with the company my mother left me.
"And the airport tip?" he asked.
"Already arranged. They'll pull her bag in Singapore." Marta smiled at the suitcase as though she'd tucked in a baby. "Then you get the voting rights, the company accounts, everything."
"Samantha says the lawyers are ready."
At the name of his mistress, something in me finally broke. Not loudly. It was a quiet, clean snap, like a thread being cut.
Marta zipped the case shut, padded to the door, and turned back. For one terrible second, I thought she'd caught my eyes open.
"Sweet dreams, Elena," she said.
The door clicked closed. I sat up, shaking, and stared at the case by the sofa. I wanted to throw up. I wanted to run screaming into the street. Instead, I reached for my phone and saw a new message from Carlos.
LOVE YOU. BIG DAY TOMORROW.
May you like
Then another message appeared, from an unknown number.
DON'T TOUCH THAT SUITCASE. THEY'RE WATCHING YOU.
