Chapter 11 - What She Did With My Phone

I recognized Beatriz before she finished her first sentence. She was using the warm voice she saved for church volunteers and strangers who admired her garden.

"I put your phone away," she said. "You were working yourself into a panic."

"I was bleeding."

"I didn't know that."

"You stood outside my door when I called you."

A pause. In the background, a television laughed at something neither of us could see.

"You'd cried wolf before."

"When?"

She had no answer. After a moment she tried a different direction. "Daniel says you've barred me from seeing my grandchildren. You can't punish Alma because you're angry with me."

"Alma isn't your punishment. She's my daughter."

"I raised Daniel by myself. You don't know what I've sacrificed."

For years that sentence had been the end of every argument. This time it landed and went nowhere.

"Where is my phone?" I asked.

"Safe."

"Where?"

"In the kitchen drawer. I was going to give it back."

"You had all morning."

Her voice grew thin. "If you tell people I hurt you, Daniel will lose his mother. Do you want that on your conscience?"

"Daniel can decide who he wants in his life. I'm deciding who gets near me."

She began to cry. I waited, because I'd learned that rushing to comfort her was how I disappeared from my own conversations.

When the call ended, I wrote everything down while I could still remember it. The nurse on duty helped me note the number and time. None of it was magic evidence, but it was a start.

Twenty minutes later a physician came to explain the surgery and what came next. I'd survived a severe obstetric emergency. Nicolás still needed intensive care. There was no easy way to know exactly why the bleeding had started.

I appreciated the honesty. Not knowing was frightening, but someone finally refusing to invent an answer was a relief.

Before he left, the doctor paused. "There's another matter. Our staff found a second form in your chart. It asks that information about your baby be released to Mrs. Hernández."
