Chapter 15 - The Plan After Birth

I read the list until the words stopped looking like English.

Step one: document instability.

Step two: psychiatric evaluation.

Step three: separate Claire from infant “for safety.”

Step four: temporary custody.

Step five: petition trustee.

Step six: move immediately.

It was not a bad decision made in panic.

It was a schedule.

A plan.

My marriage had become a project timeline.

The next morning, Detective Chen returned with an assistant district attorney named Paul Reilly.

He asked me whether I was willing to cooperate fully, including giving them access to messages between Ethan and me.

“Yes.”

“Even if they’re embarrassing?”

“Yes.”

“Even if they’re painful?”

I looked at my stomach.

“Nothing you find on that phone will hurt more than what he already did.”

They found texts I had forgotten.

Ethan asking when my trust documents would be updated.

Ethan asking whether the baby’s legal name mattered to the trust.

Ethan joking that his mother would “finally relax” once the baby arrived.

At the time, they had seemed annoying.

Now they read like preparation.

By afternoon, the contractions slowed.

Dr. Patel smiled for the first time in two days.

“If this continues, we may keep her inside a little longer.”

I cried from relief.

Then security called the room.

“There are officers here asking to speak with you.”

Detective Chen looked at Reilly.

He nodded.

Two uniformed officers entered.

One carried paperwork.

“We’re executing arrest warrants,” Chen told me. “Margaret for aggravated assault and related charges. Ethan for conspiracy, intimidation, and evidence tampering. Other charges may follow.”

My chest tightened.

“Where are they?”

“Margaret is at the family home.”

“And Ethan?”

Chen hesitated.

“He’s missing.”

My relief disappeared.

“What do you mean, missing?”

May you like

“His car was found at Logan Airport.”

But airport cameras showed he never boarded a plane.
