Chapter 4 - He Was Already There

I watched the video six times.

The first time, I shook.

The second time, I cried.

By the sixth, I felt nothing at all.

The doorbell camera had no useful sound through the glass, but the picture was painfully clear. Margaret blocking me. Her hand on my wrist. Me trying to move past her.

Then Ethan appeared behind her.

He wasn’t rushing toward us.

He wasn’t surprised.

He stopped in the hall and watched.

Margaret turned her head.

Ethan nodded.

Then she pushed me.

After I disappeared down the stairs, he stepped backward out of view.

Twenty-three seconds later, the front door opened and Ethan came running inside, performing panic for an audience he did not know existed.

Renee covered her mouth.

“Oh my God.”

I paused the frame on Ethan’s face.

“He knew.”

“Claire, you need the police.”

“Not yet.”

She stared at me. “Not yet?”

“If Margaret has a lawyer already standing beside my hospital bed, they planned more than one lie.”

I forwarded the video to a private email Ethan did not know about, then uploaded it to cloud storage under a fake file name. I sent another copy to Lena Ortiz, my college roommate, now a family-law attorney in Cambridge.

My text was simple.

CALL ME. DO NOT CALL ETHAN.

Then I deleted the video from the visible message thread.

Ten minutes later, Ethan walked in.

He carried coffee and the smile he used when he wanted to pretend we were normal.

“How are my girls?”

I wanted to break the cup against the wall.

Instead I said, “Tired.”

He sat beside my bed.

“Mom’s attorney upset you.”

“Your mother upset me when she pushed me down a staircase.”

His smile vanished.

He reached for my phone.

I moved it away.

“What are you doing?”

“Just checking the time.”

“There’s a clock behind you.”

For a moment neither of us moved.

Then my phone buzzed in my hand.

The lock screen lit up with Lena’s reply.

I SAW THE VIDEO. CLAIRE, DO NOT BE ALONE WITH YOUR HUSBAND.

Ethan read every word.
