Chapter 1 - The Ring Beside His Plate

The slap came so fast I never saw Diane's hand move.
One second I was carrying a bowl of soup toward the Christmas table. The next, my cheek exploded with pain and my hip struck the edge of the dining table.
The bowl tipped.
Scalding broth poured over my right hand.
I screamed and dropped to my knees.
For one second, the room went dead quiet.
Then Ryan's cousin Brad laughed.
Not loudly. Just one ugly little sound into his wineglass.
I looked at my husband.
For seven years, I had defended Ryan Bennett and quietly covered debts he called "temporary problems."
I thought this would finally be the moment he stood up for me.
Ryan leaned back in his chair.
"Maybe now you'll learn how to behave in this family."
Something inside me went still.
Diane stood over me in a red Christmas dress, her mouth tight with satisfaction.
"Get up," she said. "You're embarrassing everyone."
My hand was already turning red. My cheek throbbed. I could hear my own pulse.
I stood slowly, slid off my wedding ring, and placed it beside Ryan's plate.
"I'm done."
Diane smiled.
"Good. Then leave."
I turned toward the hallway.
The dining room door opened.
Charles Bennett walked in carrying a thick brown envelope.
My father-in-law took in my burned hand, my swollen cheek, and the ring beside his son's plate.
His expression hardened.
"What happened?"
Nobody answered.
Ryan finally shrugged. "Emily's being dramatic."
Charles stared at him for a long moment, then set the envelope in the middle of the table.
"Before you throw her out," he said quietly, "you should probably know something."
Diane frowned. "Know what?"
Charles opened the envelope and pulled out a deed.
"This house," he said, "doesn't belong to any of you."
Ryan went pale.
May you like
Charles looked straight at me.
"It belongs to Emily."
