Chapter 20 - My House, My Name

Three months later, the Bennett mansion was empty.

No Christmas lights.

No family portraits.

No dining table where I had learned exactly how little my pain mattered to the people sitting around it.

I stood in the foyer with Monica and Charles while movers carried out the last boxes.

Charles had resigned as CEO and agreed to remain only long enough to help the independent board stabilize the company. The employee retirement fund had been restored. Assets seized from North Ridge and Victor's firm were already repaying the Morgan reserve.

Victor was awaiting trial on charges tied to fraud and my father's death.

Diane had taken a plea on financial crimes and assault while the larger conspiracy case continued.

Ryan had pleaded guilty to fraud and embezzlement and agreed to testify.

I had signed the divorce papers without shaking.

Charles looked around the house.

"Your father saved this place once."

"He saved people," I said. "The building was collateral."

I would not live there.

Instead, I gave the property to a nonprofit partnership creating temporary housing for women and children leaving abusive homes.

Diane would have hated the irony.

Before leaving, I walked into the dining room one last time.

The table was gone.

On the floor, near where I had fallen, I found a tiny gold mark caught between two boards.

My wedding ring.

Someone must have knocked it from the table that night.

I picked it up.

Seven years rushed back at once - good mornings, lies, apologies, and the life I kept repairing.

I placed the ring inside the empty fireplace and left it there.

At the front door, Charles handed me my father's original letter.

You saved them once. You do not owe them your life.

I read it twice.

Then I stepped outside into cold spring sunlight.

My hand had healed. The house behind me no longer belonged to the Bennetts.

Neither did I.

And for the first time in years, walking away did not feel like losing a family.

It felt like getting my name back.
