Chapter 15 - Martin's Plan

The recording was twenty-three minutes long.
Martin talked too much because he believed Lauren needed reassurance.
He explained how temporary guardianship could lead to court supervision of the trust.
He described "documenting instability" and creating financial pressure.
He never explicitly said to hurt me.
He didn't need to.
The plan was clear enough.
Create chaos.
Make me look unreliable.
Use James's deployments against us.
Position Lauren as the safe alternative.
Then bill Emma's trust for legal, housing, educational, and "care management" expenses through companies Martin controlled.
James paused the recording.
"He was going to drain it legally enough to hide it."
Megan nodded. "Or make it look legal."
Lauren finally agreed to talk with detectives.
She admitted Martin had promised her a percentage of the money and help clearing her debt.
She denied planning to drug me or stage an emergency.
"I thought those forms were scare tactics," she said through her attorney.
I believed exactly half of that.
Then she admitted something else.
The anonymous threat photograph of Emma's daycare had come from Martin.
Not Lauren.
He had been following us.
Police issued a warrant.
That night, James checked every window twice.
At 2:17 a.m., our alarm went off.
He was out of bed before I fully woke.
The back door sensor flashed red.
I grabbed Emma and locked us in the bedroom while James called 911.
Footsteps crossed the kitchen.
Slow.
Then stopped.
James did not chase them.
He stayed between us and the hallway.
Blue lights appeared outside.
The intruder was gone.
But on our kitchen counter sat Grandma Ruth's trust binder.

On top of it was a note.
DROP THE CHARGES OR NEXT TIME I DON'T KNOCK.
