Chapter 19 - The Choice

Mom did not deny it.

When I confronted her, she sat in my living room and cried quietly.

"I was scared for you," she said.

"Then you should have helped me."

"I thought Lauren could take some pressure off."

"You thought replacing me was help?"

She shook her head. "Not at first. It changed."

That was the problem with every excuse in our family.

It changed.

It got out of hand.

Nobody meant for this.

Meanwhile, the one person expected to absorb the damage was always me.

I looked at Mom and finally understood why Thanksgiving had felt so familiar.

Lauren hit my baby.

Everyone froze.

Then Mom asked the person protecting Emma to keep the peace.

That pattern had existed long before Emma was born.

"We're taking space," I said.

Mom's face crumpled.

"For how long?"

"I don't know."

"Christmas?"

"I don't know."

"Her first birthday?"

I looked at Emma playing on the floor beside James.

"Being her grandmother is not a right you keep by asking me to forget what happened."

Mom nodded through tears.

Lauren later pleaded guilty to fraud-related charges and accepted responsibility for falsified records. Martin faced a much larger case involving forgery, financial exploitation, and conspiracy tied to the trust and development deal.

The land sale was frozen.

Emma's account was restored through insurance and restitution proceedings.

But the biggest change was not financial.

It was simple.

Our family stopped getting automatic access to us.

They had to earn it.

Months later, Dad called James privately.

"Do you think Rachel will ever forgive us?"

James answered, "That's the wrong question."

Dad went quiet.

"Then what's the right one?"

May you like

James looked at me before answering.

"What are you going to do differently if she does?"
