Chapter 19 - The Gate Was Never Hers to Close

Claudia was located at a transport station after officers sought to question her about the disputed documents and threats. There was no dramatic chase. She was a woman with two expensive suitcases, sitting beneath a departure board while the stories she'd told fell apart.

The investigation continued. Andrés faced allegations involving false documentation and the handling of property transactions. Claudia's role in the attempted transfer, the threats, and the medication records would be examined through the courts. Valverde Urban withdrew its immediate closing attempt and the disputed deposit was frozen for review.

Teresa kept warning us not to mistake those steps for a conviction. At Sara's bedside, Teresa explained the options for an updated will and property arrangements. Sara listened, asked questions, and chose a plan to protect the home and the shared courtyard, with independent advice and witnesses. She didn't surrender control to either grandson.

"You're disappointed," she teased when I looked surprised.

"Only that you think you need protection from us."

"I love you both. That's why I won't make you fight over a house."

Mateo laughed once and wiped his eyes. "We'd fight over the lemons before the house."

"You always stole the biggest ones," she said.

He bent to hug her, careful of the IV. I stepped aside and watched them. I had imagined fixing everything with one decisive act. The slower work of records and witnesses had left Sara at the center of her own life.

Before we left, she held out the blue-coated figure of Saint Christopher from her repaired bracelet.

"Keep this," she told me.

"You need it."

"No, Hugo. You need to understand why I hid the note in it."

She looked from me to Mateo.

"Because I knew one of you would come. I just didn't know whether you'd believe me."
