Chapter 16 - What Really Happened

By the time prosecutors laid out the timeline, the truth was uglier because it was ordinary.

No secret assassin.

No perfect plan.

A confrontation became an injury.

Then fear became concealment.

Concealment became fraud.

Fraud became thirteen months of impersonation.

Claire confronted Vanessa at her apartment with copied financial records.

Vanessa tried to take the laptop.

Claire stepped backward, struck a side table, and suffered a serious head injury.

Vanessa called Marcus instead of emergency services.

Marcus arrived and made the worst professional decision of his life.

He treated Claire privately.

He told himself she could be monitored.

He told himself a hospital would create police questions.

He told himself he was protecting everyone until morning.

Thomas learned what happened and came to Briar Lake.

He did not cause Claire's injury.

He did help keep her hidden.

Claire became more confused.

Marcus finally called an ambulance.

She died before definitive treatment.

The medical experts would never say an earlier hospital visit certainly would have saved her.

They would say it gave her a better chance.

That uncertainty mattered legally.

After her death, Marcus signed the certificate.

Thomas approved keeping it private.

Graham kept Claire's systems active.

Then they began using the dead account.

At first, Thomas claimed it was only temporary—to prevent panic.

Then Marcus used it to approve Northstar invoices.

Vanessa used it to move money.

Graham used it to hide access.

And every week they continued made the next week harder to confess.

Until thirteen months passed.

I asked Ortiz, "What about the cremation?"

The funeral home had received proper medical paperwork.

The falsehood was not that Claire died.

The falsehood was keeping her death from me, from the company, and from systems that should have closed her identity.

Thomas arranged the cremation and kept the urn at Briar Lake because he said he "didn't know what else to do."

That sentence made me furious.

There was always something else to do.

Stop.

Then Ortiz handed me a small evidence bag.

Inside was Claire's necklace.

A silver compass our father gave her when she graduated college.
