Chapter 13 - No One Left Behind

I ran for the service entrance, the one Dad had taught us to use during summer thunderstorms. Marcus caught my arm.

"You don't go in alone," he said.

"My father is down there."

"And we will get him. Both of you stay behind me."

A firefighter arrived with a pry bar. The first blow bent the cellar latch. The second pulled it free. Damp ash blew into the beam of his flashlight. From below, Dad cried out, and something heavy crashed.

We descended single file. Juliette stood beside an open storage cabinet, frantically searching a metal strongbox. Dad sat against the wall, one hand pressed to his ankle. He was breathing, but his face had turned gray.

"Don't touch the box," Juliette warned. "It's mine."

"It belonged to Mom," I told her. "She kept her letters there."

A crack traveled across the ceiling. Marcus moved between Juliette and the door. "Put it down and come upstairs."

"You think they'll let me keep anything?" she shouted. "Everything was supposed to be mine!"

She grabbed a packet of yellowed pages. The rotten stair tread split beneath her heel. Juliette fell against the wall, dropping the papers into a puddle. Marcus hauled her to the safe side of the landing while the firefighter lifted Dad.

I could have left those pages in the water. I could have reached for Juliette as if she were still the little girl who cried when she lost her doll. Instead, I picked up the packet and followed the others out.

Outside, Dad leaned against the ambulance, shivering beneath a blanket. "I'm sorry, Cricket," he said. "I should've questioned everything."

"Yes," I answered. "You should have."

Juliette sat in a patrol car, staring straight ahead. A deputy read her the arrest warrant. Marcus spread the rescued pages on the hood of his car beneath a portable light.

The first was a private payment schedule. The last was a handwritten note from Bernard to Juliette: ONCE THE PATIENT IS RECLASSIFIED, FINALIZE DISPOSAL.

I looked up. "Reclassified how?"

Marcus didn't answer. He had just found a date beside the note: next Thursday.
