Chapter 8 - What Robert Planned to Tell Me

Robert and I had argued the week before he died. Not about the land or the trust, but about a suitcase of papers he had brought home from his office. He said he needed to tell me something, then stopped when Caleb walked into the kitchen. Later, he kissed my forehead and promised we would talk after his meeting with the treasurer.
Mara asked the trust administrator, Paul Reddick, to meet us. He confirmed that Robert had requested a full audit of the family trust shortly before his death. He had also asked for a copy of a document called the North Shore Covenant, a restriction that prevented the lake property from being sold to a private developer unless the beneficiaries unanimously agreed.
"The covenant was amended after Robert died," Paul said. "The amendment claims you approved the sale."
"I never saw it."
"Which law firm?" Mara asked.
Paul slid a card across the table. It bore the name of Brandon Cole, the lawyer who had prepared the guardianship petition. He was also a paid consultant for Northline Development.
Paul gave us a copy of Robert's last audit request. A handwritten note at the bottom read: "If I can't stop the sale, tell Eleanor to check the blue ledger."
Wren suddenly sat up. "Grandpa kept one in the boathouse. He called it the fishing book."
Before we left, Paul caught my arm.
"Mrs. Vale, Robert also asked me to change the beneficiary instructions on a small account. I never completed it. The request was dated the day he died."

He handed me the form.
The beneficiary line was blank. The signature line was not.
