Chapter 16 - FIRE AND A VOICE FROM THE PAST

The smoke spread faster than I expected.

I dropped low and crawled toward the exit.

Somewhere in the hallway, Vanessa coughed.

Then glass shattered.

Harris shouted my name.

I followed his voice until an officer grabbed my arm and pulled me through a side door into cold rain.

"Where is she?" Harris asked.

"Inside. She ran toward the back."

Fire crews arrived minutes later.

They found no sign of Vanessa.

A broken basement window suggested she had escaped.

But the cassette recorder survived. I had grabbed it without realizing it when the desk fell.

Back at the station, Harris digitized the tape.

There was more after the warning my mother had recorded.

Much more.

Rachel's voice continued:

"I found the missing medication logs. I know you changed patient records. I know you blamed me when the clinic investigated. If you threaten my family again, I am giving everything to the board and the police."

Then Vanessa's voice, distant but clear:

"You think people believe women like you because you have a nice house and a perfect husband."

Rachel answered, "This is not about my house. It is about what you did."

Vanessa: "You took my job."

Rachel: "You lost it yourself."

The tape ended.

Dad stared at the speaker.

"She kept this for nine years."

"Because she wanted control of the story," Harris said.

A technician entered the room holding a report.

The paint comparison was complete.

Silver paint embedded in Vanessa's old vehicle matched the manufacturer and production batch used on my mother's car.

It was not absolute proof by itself.

But together with the key fob, Mark's photograph, the threats, and the tape, it changed everything.

Harris's phone rang.

He listened, then stood.

"We have a sighting."

"Where?"

May you like

He looked at me.

"Your mother's grave."
