Chapter 18 - THE TRUTH IN COURT

The case took months.

Truth is slow when it has spent nine years buried under fear.

Vanessa faced charges connected to May's death, the kidnapping of Mark, evidence tampering, threats, and the reopened investigation into my mother's crash. Prosecutors also uncovered financial fraud tied to Dad's accounts and forged documents intended to give Vanessa control of the house if he became "incapacitated."

She had not married my father for one reason.

She had married him for every reason she could use.

In court, Caleb testified.

He was terrified.

I watched him grip the witness stand with both hands while Vanessa stared at him from the defense table.

"Did your mother tell you what to say about May?" the prosecutor asked.

"Yes."

"What did she tell you?"

"That if anyone asked, I found the cat already dead."

"Was that true?"

Caleb looked at me.

Then at his father.

"No."

His voice shook, but it did not disappear.

"I saw her hurt May. I told her to stop."

Vanessa's expression finally cracked.

Not with guilt.

With anger.

That was the moment I understood something important.

Some people are sorry because they caused pain.

Others are only sorry because the pain finally has witnesses.

Mark testified about the damaged car. Dad testified about the hidden documents. I testified about May, the collar, the shed, and the threats.

When the prosecutor played my mother's tape, the courtroom went silent.

Vanessa stared straight ahead.

Weeks later, the jury returned.

Guilty on the major charges before them.

The reopened crash case would continue through additional proceedings, but for the first time, my mother's death was no longer filed away as a mystery no one cared enough to reopen.

Outside the courthouse, reporters shouted questions.

I ignored them.

Caleb walked beside me.

"Is it over?" he asked.

I looked up at the gray sky.

"The court part isn't."

"Then what is?"

I touched May's collar in my pocket.

"Her control over us."

That evening, Dad handed me an envelope recovered from Vanessa's storage unit.

On the front were two words in my mother's handwriting:

For Emma.
