Chapter 16 - A Practice Run

The chair in Rosa's older recording was a cheap rental, not mine. Celeste rolled it toward the same broken edge where I had gone over. She stopped, walked behind it, and made a brief pushing motion before pulling it back.

"She was testing whether the chair would move," Mara said.

"We can't know what she was thinking from a video," Sonia cautioned. "But Brooks will want the original file and the rental company's records."

Brooks secured the original recording and a rental receipt in Celeste's name. Her accident story was getting harder to believe.

Then the storm hit.

By late afternoon, water pooled at the bottom of Haven Street. The city inspector called me about a temporary construction barrier Mariner's contractor had installed beside the drainage outlet. Its placement appeared to restrict the flow.

"Can you clear it?" I asked.

"Public works is on the way. The site supervisor has been told not to touch anything until we document it."

Mara looked at the darkening sky. "June's house is on the low side."

We drove over with bottled water, blankets, and a list of neighbors who might need help. I couldn't lift sandbags or carry people. I could read the topography and tell the crew where water would go next.

"Close the lower pedestrian path," I told the supervisor. "Keep everybody away from that current. Use the higher access road."

He listened. It felt strange and wonderful to be useful without needing to pretend I could still walk.

Public works removed the obstruction under the inspector's direction. The pooling water began to fall. Residents were advised to stay on higher ground until the storm passed.

June brought me a cup of coffee and put it in my shaking hand.

"Your mother always said you were stubborn," she told me.

"She wasn't wrong."

Across the street, Brooks approached, rain dripping from her jacket.

"Daniel," she said, "we've verified who Celeste called while you were underwater."

May you like

"Warren?"

Brooks nodded. "Not 911. Warren Vale. And his attorney says he wants to talk."
