Chapter 2 - The Release

The red button did not call the police or work some miracle. It released my lap strap.

My daughter, Mara, had insisted on the modification after I once got stuck during a wheelchair transfer. A rehabilitation technician fitted a simple mechanical cable, with a large waterproof release I could reach even when my right hand cramped.

"Practice it until you hate me," Mara had said.

I had complained. I practiced anyway.

Underwater, I pressed hard. The strap sprang loose. The chair fell another foot, dragging my coat before I tore it free. My legs gave me nothing. I pulled with my arms, kicked as well as I could, and broke the surface coughing so violently I could barely breathe.

The pier wall rose above me, slick and impossible to grip.

"Help!" I managed.

At first I heard only the harbor bells. Then a door slammed.

"Daniel?" someone shouted.

Rosa Alvarez, the marina electrician, came running from the maintenance shed carrying a life ring. She threw it past me, hauled the line tight, and braced her boots against a cleat.

"Hold on! I've got you!"

She called 911 on speaker while she pulled. I caught the lowest ladder rung with one hand. Rosa kept the rope taut until the harbor patrol arrived and lifted me out.

Celeste stood at the far end of the dock, wrapped in her expensive cream coat.

"His chair rolled," she told the first officer. "I told him not to get so close."

I could not stop shaking. "She pushed me."

Celeste gave the officer a look of exhausted sorrow. "He hasn't been himself since the accident."

Rosa knelt beside me. "Don't waste your breath. I heard him yell at you before he went over."

Celeste's gaze snapped toward her.

An EMT covered me with a thermal blanket. As they rolled my stretcher toward the ambulance, Rosa slipped something into the officer's gloved hand: a waterproof document sleeve she had hooked out of the water with a boat pole.

Inside was the page I had dropped.
