Chapter 18 - Under Oath

Months passed before the criminal case reached a decisive hearing. Daniel learned that waiting was its own kind of work. He attended Noah's checkups, met with investigators when asked, and answered hard questions without trying to sound like a perfect father.

Maria arrived at court in a plain blue jacket, carrying a folder of dated notes. She had taken another job with an older couple and made it clear she wanted no publicity. Daniel respected that.

Under questioning, she described the nursery door, Vanessa pulling the plug, the steam, the baby's crying, and the moment she restored the feed.

"Why didn't you immediately grab the iron?" the defense attorney asked.

"Because I was afraid she would turn it toward the baby if I startled her," Maria said. "I waited until she looked away. Then I gave his father back his eyes."

"You didn't see the iron touch him?"

"No. I'm grateful for that every day."

Josie explained the false incident log. Owen's business records and messages connected the prepared complaint to the attempted diversion of money. Daniel testified that he had seen only the final moments on his camera, not the ones before it went dark.

Vanessa ultimately entered a plea to child-endangerment and fraud-related charges under an agreement that included confinement, restitution, and restrictions on contacting the witnesses. Owen's separate case continued. The trust remained under its original safeguards.

Outside court, a reporter asked whether Daniel could finally forgive his wife.

"Today's not about me forgiving anyone," he said. "It's about Noah being safe and Maria being believed."

That evening Noah cried when a kettle released a sharp burst of steam in Ruth's kitchen. Daniel switched it off at once and held him until he calmed.

The court case had ended one part of the danger.

Daniel understood, suddenly, that it hadn't ended everything.
