Chapter 6 - The Photograph's Missing Minute

Daniel enlarged the threatening photograph until the pixels broke apart. He recognized the blue mug on his desk and a stack of contracts from the week before his wedding. Noah's face was red. Daniel's eyes were closed.

"I remember that night," he said. "I fed him at two. Vanessa offered to watch him while I rested. She took the baby from my arms."

"And then put him back beside you long enough to take this," Ruth said.

"Maybe. I don't know. That's the problem."

Simone asked him not to delete the messages. He forwarded them to Ortiz, along with the photo and its phone header. It showed a different side of the threat: somebody had been collecting moments that could make a tired father look dangerous.

Daniel called his office manager, Ben Torres, and asked how Harbor's bills had been approved.

"They arrived from your email," Ben said. "Vanessa said your phone wasn't receiving approval requests."

"Did I ever authorize her to speak for me?"

A pause. "You said she could help with household expenses. I thought infant care counted. I'm sorry."

"Don't apologize yet. Preserve everything."

That evening, Maria called from her sister's house. She sounded embarrassed.

"I should have told you about the pictures."

"What pictures?"

"She made me hold Noah while she photographed you sleeping. She said she was making a scrapbook about the hard months after Elise died. She called it healing."

Daniel closed his eyes. Vanessa had put his grief in a frame and saved it as ammunition.

"Maria, did she ever tell you why she wanted you gone?"

"She told me a good wife shouldn't have to share a child with an employee."

A car door slammed in Maria's background. Her voice dropped.

"Mr. Price, Owen just pulled up outside my sister's building."
